%3cdiv xmlns%3d%22http%3a//www.w3.org/1999/xhtml%22%3e %3cp%3eThis is a post that I am guessing will get some fairly passionate responses on either side of the debate.%26nbsp%3b Here%27s the question lots of people are asking today%3a where and how much does privacy really matter to you online%3f%26nbsp%3b This is a critical question for 3 reasons%3a%3cbr%3e%3c/p%3e %3col%3e %3cli%3etesting with connie %3c/li%3e%3cli%3eMarketers have more data about people than they ever have %3c/li%3e%3cli%3eSocial networks are experimenting with new ways to let marketers use data that was previously hidden %3c/li%3e%3cli%3ePeople are sharing more and more of their private lives online%3c/li%3e%3c/ol%3e %3cp%3eI wrote a piece about two weeks ago for the ThinkerNet site which talked about %3ca href%3d%22http%3a//www.internetevolution.com/author.asp%3fsection_id%3d537%26amp%3bdoc_id%3d139411%22%3ewhy identity may be the future of online advertising%3c/a%3e.%26nbsp%3b The article got some very good reasoned comments from folks who wondered whether Facebook may be overstepping their bounds and compromising their user%27s privacy.%26nbsp%3b These are valid questions hovering around many other sites and social networks as well.%3c/p%3e %3cp%3eI recall another such uprising a few years ago when Google first introduced Gmail with a similarly contentious idea ... serving text ads based on the content of your email.%26nbsp%3b You may disagree with me on this%2c but I feel that one place online where I am most concerned about privacy is in my email.%26nbsp%3b The simple reason for this is that the information I choose to share on any social network is up to me.%26nbsp%3b My email%2c on the other hand%2c is usually meant to be private.%3c/p%3e %3cp%3eFor these reasons%2c I would say that privacy matters most to me in my email%2c and less so in my profiles on social networks.%26nbsp%3b Does this mean that I want people grabbing my personal details or stealing my identity%3f%26nbsp%3b Of course not.%26nbsp%3b But the problem is that many people are lumping privacy concerns into this single bucket.%26nbsp%3b Just because someone serves ads against data they have doesn%27t mean they are going to sell your credit card information and email address to the highest bidder.%26nbsp%3b When Google first introduced Gmail%2c it came with the unheard of condition that in order to get it%2c you would have to be comfortable with them serving text ads against the content of your emails%3c/p%3e %3cp%3eYet in time I got used to it - as most Gmail users did.%26nbsp%3b Perhaps I%27m unique%2c but I%27ve even been guilty of sending myself an email with a brand or product name in it so I will get the associated Google ads with discount codes and links that I can click on and follow to purchase an item I was already buying.%26nbsp%3b So%2c here%27s the real question I am coming to ... if we can all get used to Google%27s algorithms reading our private emails and serving ads against them%2c then won%27t we all get used to identity targeting schemes like Facebook%27s beacon as well%3f%26nbsp%3b What do you think%3f%3cbr%3e%3cbr%3eand adding more%3cbr%3e%3cbr%3eITBrix LLC%2c publisher of the feature-rich WordFrame community-building%2c collaboration and web publishing software solution%2c has been named the premier platform partner of Social Media Today LLC %28SMT%29%2c a New York area-based web publishing firm that builds and manages business-to-business online communities for customers like SAP%2c Oracle and BusinessWeek. %3c/p%3e %3cp%3e %3cp%3e %3cp%3e%22There has been a steady increase in inquiries and interest in the WordFrame platform and its advanced social media features%2c%22 said ITBrix CEO George Athannassov. %22We wanted to leverage the vast experience and best practices that Social Media Today has developed by being a first mover in this rapidly growing field. Both Social Media Today principals%2c Robin Fray Carey and Jerry Bowles%2c are media veterans with years of experience in marketing%2c advertising and corporate communications%2c as well as print media and journalism.%22%3c/p%3e %3cp%3e %3cp%3eSMT%27s currently active communities--Social Media Today %28socialmediatoday.com%29%2c MyVenturepad %28myventurepad.com%29%2c The Customer Collective %28thecustomercollective.com%29 and The Energy Collective %28www.theenergycollective.com%29--are all built on the WordFrame platform. %3c/p%3e %3cp%3e %3cp%3e%22Our client engagement model is to work extensively with our sponsors to create communities of discussion around specific business interests and to build engagement and productive relationships%2c%22 says Robin Frey Carey. %22Our entire competency is built around creating influence and nurturing customers and potential customers through online community.
